Bring to the call

  • Legal company name and address
  • Incorporation date and state
  • Entity type: C-corp, S-corp, LLC, and so on. How you’re taxed matters for payroll setup.
  • Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN): see below for where to find it
  • Industry (NAICS) code: see below
  • Number of employees you’ll pay, and which states they work in
  • Your bank account for funding payroll: either your online banking login to link it through Plaid, or your routing and account numbers
  • Who your authorized signer is: the officer who signs tax filings and agreements for the company. Usually a founder. This is a detail on your company record, not a separate login.
  • If you’re migrating: admin login for your current payroll provider. See Migrating from another provider.
You don’t need state tax accounts before the call. Bolto registers you in each state after you add an employee there. If you already have state account numbers from a previous provider, bring them and we’ll enter them.

Finding your FEIN

Your FEIN (also called an EIN) is the number the IRS uses to identify your business. You’ll find it on:
  • The IRS letter you received when the number was issued (CP 575), or a replacement letter (147C)
  • Past business tax returns
  • The paperwork you used to open your business bank account
Your accountant or previous payroll provider will also have it. Don’t guess. A wrong FEIN delays setup and can send tax deposits to the wrong account.

Finding your NAICS code

A NAICS code is a six-digit industry code used by tax agencies. Search the NAICS website for your industry, or ask your accountant.

Common questions

Our company doesn’t have a phone number. What should I put?
An admin’s work number or a virtual phone number.
We don’t have a business bank account yet.
You will need to open one before the call. Payroll is debited from a company account, not a personal one.
Can my cofounder join the call?
Yes. Bring anyone who will run payroll or needs admin access. We’ll set up their accounts too.
How long does setup take after the call?
Typically within an hour for a new payroll customer. 2 to 6 weeks if you’re migrating from another provider, because we carry over your payroll history.
What happens on the call?
We enter your company information, confirm the authorized signer, connect your bank account, sign the agreements, and plan your first payroll date.
